Is a Rs. 4,000 T-Shirt Worth It? An Honest Breakdown
Let's talk about the question every young person thinks when they see our price tag.
"Four thousand rupees? For a t-shirt?"
It's a completely reasonable reaction. You can buy a tee for a few hundred rupees online. So when premium t-shirts in India cost ten times that, you deserve a real explanation, not a vague line about "quality".
This is our honest breakdown. We'll tell you what goes into the price, and also when a pricey tee isn't worth it.
First, What We Charge
Right now, our Gramophone Bloom tee is Rs. 4,299 and Lasso Trails is Rs. 4,499.
That puts us in the premium streetwear range in India. Plenty of homegrown streetwear brands price their graphic tees at similar levels, and some go considerably higher.
So what are you actually paying for?
1. The Fabric
A basic tee is often made of lightweight single jersey cotton or a blend, sometimes around 140 to 180 GSM.
Ours are 280 GSM heavyweight, 100% interlock cotton. That matters for cost in two ways.
Heavier fabric simply uses more cotton per garment. And interlock is a double-knit fabric, made with two sets of needles, which uses more yarn and a more complex knitting process than standard single jersey.
The result is a tee that feels thicker, smoother and more structured. It also costs more to make, before a single design is printed.
2. The Finishing
Our tees go through a double biowash process. Biowashing helps soften the fabric, gives it a cleaner surface and can reduce issues like pilling. Doing it twice adds time and cost to production.
Most people never notice finishing processes by name. They just notice that one tee feels nicer on day one and still looks decent after months of washing.
3. The Print
Our graphics are screen printed. For large artwork, like the back illustration on Lasso Trails, that means preparing screens, lining up colours and curing the ink properly.
It takes more setup than many print-on-demand methods. We chose it because we wanted bold, durable artwork that would last.
4. The Fit and Pattern
A structured oversized fit sounds simple. It isn't.
Getting an oversized tee to look boxy and intentional, instead of sloppy, takes pattern work, fabric testing and multiple samples. On our story page, we mention that samples came back wrong more than once. Every round of sampling costs money and time, and that cost sits behind the final garment.
5. Small, Limited Runs
This is a big one. Large brands produce huge quantities, and the cost per piece drops a lot as volume goes up.
We make limited drops and don't restock. Smaller runs mean each piece costs more to produce. It's the trade-off for making something that isn't everywhere.
6. Original Design
Every Cadenza piece starts from a musical world and an original illustration. Lasso Trails flips western imagery and hides observers inside the scene. Gramophone Bloom shows analog machinery overtaken by florals.
That creative work, from concept to artwork to final print-ready design, is part of what you're buying. You're not paying for a stock graphic.
7. Running a Real Brand
Then there's everything nobody photographs. Packaging, shipping, payment processing, returns, customer support, photography, website costs, and taxes. These costs exist for every brand, and they're included in the price of every tee.
When a Rs. 4,000 Tee Is Not Worth It
Here's the honest part.
A premium t-shirt isn't worth it if you're paying mostly for a logo with ordinary fabric underneath. It isn't worth it if the brand won't tell you the GSM, fabric composition or print method. It isn't worth it if you'll wear it twice and forget it.
And it's not worth it if it stretches your budget in a way that stresses you out. No tee is worth that. Please don't buy something just because it's exclusive.
How to Judge Any Premium Tee
Whether you buy premium t-shirts from us or anyone else, use this checklist.
-
Check the GSM. Heavier fabric usually means a more substantial garment.
-
Check the fibre and knit. 100% cotton, interlock or quality jersey are good signs.
-
Ask about the print method. Durable methods matter for graphics.
-
Look for finishing details. Biowash, pre-shrinking and good neck construction all help.
-
Read the design story. Original artwork is worth more than a generic print.
-
Think about cost per wear. A Rs. 4,000 tee worn 100 times costs Rs. 40 per wear. A Rs. 500 tee worn five times costs Rs. 100.
So, Are Premium T-Shirts Worth It?
If you want a tee that's built properly, carries an original story, isn't everywhere, and will stay in rotation for years, a premium t-shirt can be a better buy than several cheap ones.
If you just want something to sleep in, buy the cheap one. We won't be offended.
We'd rather you buy one piece you love than five you don't.
